Fragmented: Behind The Film

Through a series of rhetorical questions, “Fragmented” touches on identity and the various ways of understanding oneself. The theme of the human body as a natural landscape supports the idea of an inter-connectivity between all natural elements of life.

“Fragmented” touches on identity and the various ways of understanding oneself. Though this experimental film begins with a personal thought, its meaning quickly develops into more universal existential rhetorical questions.

By dividing the protagonist’s face into fragments, the abstract markings visually allude to our multidimensionality and how we are inaccurately defined by one single characteristic.

Through adopting a wider lens on what we are made of, the film draws attention to how interwoven we are with each other, as well as with our environment. The protagonist questions, “What makes me so different from anything else in this world?” This interconnectivity is moreover reflected in the sound design. The protagonist’s body parts are linked to different natural sounds to highlight the theme of the human body as an actual landscape.

In the end, while admittedly I had my own intention while developing the film, I hope to keep it open to interpretation.
