One String : Behind The Film

“One String” depicts a young woman's struggle with depression through a metaphorical entanglement with the string of life.

Through “One String”, I wanted to visually represent feeling lost, overwhelmed, and hopeless. A string, symbolic for the string of life, entangles and traps the protagonist as she slowly drowns under the pressure. However, on the brink of giving up and removing her string of life altogether, the young woman suddenly finds the strength within her to snap back to life and into the real world.

Decidedly, my intention with this short was not simply to show a character struggling with life, but one who finds the strength within themselves to overcome life’s hardships. This film is intended to serve as a reminder that although difficult times are unavoidable in the span of a lifetime, pain can be temporary when adopting the correct perspective. I am in no way attempting to downplay the weight and complexity of anxiety and depression, but I simply hope to project the importance of not losing hope and remembering that on the other side of struggle, there almost always lies a breakthrough and a new found strength.
