Anonymous : Behind The Film
“Anonymous” echos the imagined anxiety and loss of identity resulting from the harmful medicalization of homosexuality by the American Psychiatric Association lasting up until 1987.
In the 1950s, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) classified homosexuality as a mental disorder. This medical form of discrimination led to therapists practicing harmful treatments to “cure” homosexuality. It took over two decades for the APA to eventually remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders.
Set in a 1960s vibe, “Anonymous” touches on the anxiety, mental harm, and loss of identity of this detrimental institutionalization of homosexuality.
